“JWF is inspiring Young Journalists as Advocates of Press Freedom”
Media and Journalism Webinars is a virtual certificate program that emphasizes experiential and hands-on learning through intensive workshops, webinars, mentorship, and interactive discussions with professional journalists for hands-on field experience. Since its launch in 2020, this global platform hosted over 37 experts and 166 participants from 33 countries across the globe. This program aims to prepare journalism students and young media professionals to succeed in their professional careers while fostering experiential learning by translating knowledge and skills into experience through research and article writing that lead to a meaningful understanding of journalism, communications, and the media professions. The webinars provide participants with profound information on up-to-date trend topics and rising opportunities as well as challenges which will empower participants to raise awareness and influence public opinion on various issues of local, national, and global concern.
Despite the detrimental setbacks, press freedom continues to be a cornerstone of democracy as it ensures that global citizens are informed and empowered to engage meaningful discourse. A free press acts as an observatory promoting transparency and providing a platform for diverse voices and opinions. When journalists can operate without fear of censorship or retaliation, they contribute to a more informed electorate, which is essential for the well-functioning democratic systems. Since the last two decades, in countries where press freedom is stifled and informed decision-making is undermined, weakened democracies have potentially resulted in authoritarian governance.
JWF`s Media and Journalism Webinars reaffirm the commitment to freedom of expression and press freedom as fundamental human rights recognized in various international agreements, acknowledging their crucial role in fostering democratic, diverse, and inclusive societies. In a time when traditional media often faces challenges, online platforms have become essential for free expression and the dissemination of information, particularly in areas where authoritarian regimes limit press freedom. This approach should ensure access to credible information, protect against the misuse of social media for harassment, and uphold freedom of expression through clear, enforceable guidelines that oppose arbitrary censorship.
Media and Journalism Webinars will host training sessions and panel discussions conducted by notable experts providing the participants with resources to tackle the contemporary challenges of journalism and human rights reporting. Additionally, panel sessions gathering notable journalists in their respective fields of video coverage, photojournalism, film-making, and investigative journalism aim to create a safe dialogue platform for participants building their careers through an exchange of professional know-how and transformative experience.
